Barnes and Noble Mini Maker Faire! November 5th/6th!
While we would all like to make it out to one of the big Maker Faires, like the World Maker Faire which was hosted last week in New York City, it’s just not always feasible. Lucky for us, the folks at Barnes and Noble are bringing the maker faire movement to thousands of people across the country this fall. On November 5th and 6th, Barnes and Noble stores will be hosting their 2nd annual Mini Maker Faires at all their stores nationwide.
According to Barnes and Noble’s website:
“The Mini Maker Faire at Barnes & Noble brings together tech enthusiasts, crafters, educators, engineers, science club members, students, entrepreneurs, hobbyists and Makers of all kinds to learn from each other, get craft ideas and science fair project ideas, hear the experts, and work on projects.”

So My Kid is a Maker, Should I Be Worried?
The day your child asks for a soldering iron for their birthday.
A maker is someone who designs, builds, hacks, improves and tinkers with physical objects in the pursuit of making. By definition, we are all makers; when you bake a cake you are making, when you build a birdhouse you are making, when you construct something out of Legos you are making, when you fold a paper airplane you are making…the list goes on and on. The maker movement has a public facing perception of just 3D printers and robotics but those are just subgroups of the movement as a whole. If your child begins showing interest in 3D printers, drones, DIY electronics, tools, microcontrollers, microcomputers, amateur science equipment, building their own music instruments, building small vehicles, etc you might have a maker on your hands!
For a deeper dive, a 2014 documentary was released about the maker movement entitled “Maker.” Here is the trailer for just a peek into more of the movement:

Learn to Solder From Kitables' Chief Soldering Engineer Jamie Bartlett
What the Flux?
If you’ve decided to read this, you’re probably new to soldering, an activity that often shows up in our kits. Soldering is simply gluing with metal so you can conduct electricity. While it might sound a bit scary working with molten metal, do not fret, you should only burn your finger tips a couple of times.
Think of the process just like cooking. First...
